Top 3 Goals for 2010

Your Top 3 Goals for 2010

By Vera Asanin

The workplace in Canada is constantly evolving, and we are learning from others every day of the year. In 2010, take the opportunity to look at your organization’s goals and how you would like your company to be recognized—both by employees and the outside world. For the ever-changing workplace we’ve got many topics covered in this issue, ranging from the importance of “emotional intelligence” at work, to burnout versus stress, to mentoring and the roles we play at work. Below are a few New Year’s resolutions we’ve suggested. Have you got more? If so, write to us at editor@yourworkplace.ca.

Resolution #1: Aim for a harassment-free workplace in 2010! If this is your goal, read on page 12 about three best practice strategies to help your organization prevent bullying, discrimination, chronic conflicts, disruptive behaviours and move closer to a more respectful workplace culture. As many employees who have been targets of psychological harassment have found, legislation does not necessarily put a stop to harassment. While policies and training can help, they do not completely resolve the problem.

Resolution #2: Create an award-winning workplace! Learn all about the ins and outs of creating a great workplace culture in our article on page 35. The Toronto business consulting firm I Love Rewards had to work hard to be an employer of choice, but its company founder and CEO began by first prioritizing its employees and establishing a culture built on collaborative dialogue, trust, clear outcomes, tolerance and teamwork.

Resolution #3: Take the time to think about company travel plans! How much are you planning to invest in corporate travel in 2010? How much return does an investment in company travel get you? Or are you simply relying on the Internet? In this issue on page 15 Jen Amos takes a look at the travel industry in Canada and what is right for your workplace. After reading the stats from IHS Global insight on behalf of the National Business Travel Association, the question you may ask yourself or your manager is, “Can you afford not to travel?”

And don’t forget our regular book review column covering the latest books you need for today’s workplace. Lisa Sansom takes a look at recent books on positive psychology and why this is relevant to your work. Beyond simple self-help books, these books are written by psychologists and use scientific studies and research to prove their points. They address topics such as unlocking the mysteries of happiness and “psychological wealth”. Did you know, for example, that positive emotions help us to broaden our outlook, physically as well as psychologically, and build our resilience and capacity to learn?

New this year, we’ve included our preliminary conference brochure in the centre of this issue. You will find terrific sessions in this year’s roster. Meet other progressive organizations and make sure you register today.

We hope you enjoy a happy, healthy 2010, both in the workplace and beyond!
