When a Statistics Canada report is released stating “The vast majority of Canadian workers were satisfied with their jobs in 2002,” readers would expect to hear a good news story. The report, however, was titled “Unhappy on the job” and focused on the relatively high proportions of men and women who worked in sales or service, or processing, manufacturing or utilities, and were unhappy on the job.
This news story was picked up across the country with the newspaper headlines “About 1.3 million Canucks hate their jobs” in Calgary, Alberta, and “One Million of Us Dissatisfied with With Job” in Hamilton, Ontario. Only on the West Coast did the papers seem to pick up on the good news with the headlines “Most Canadians are satisfied with their job” in The Vancouver Sun and Victoria’s Times Colonist.
