What I Think: The “Imperfect” Employee

New talent not keen on policies for a “flawless” workplace

While I was in a grocery store I overheard a father say to his young son, “You are perfect just the way you are”. For a moment I thought he was talking to me. After I secretly laughed at the audacity of my assumption, I wondered about the merits of his statement. 

Do you ever get tired of being told how you can improve? It seems that there are so many systems — processes and procedures designed to help us become better. Job evaluations, performance appraisals, and talent reviews are designed to measure performance to expectations, and as you near the “perfection” mark, the criteria changes, the benchmarks are adjusted and you are once again an “imperfect” employee striving to be the best you can be.
