The Chance To Change

Resilience in the workplace means translating a failure into a growth opportunity. But how do you get there?

Meet Norm and Nick. Both are dynamic over-achievers—top-of-the-class MBA grads who had no trouble landing high-powered jobs where they’ve shone ever since. Their lives and career paths have been a textbook series of success stories, the result of talent backed by hard work. But now the stars have been unexpectedly dimmed. Both suddenly find themselves laid off as their companies struggle to recover from the recession.

Fast-forward a year and how are Norm and Nick doing? Not surprisingly, both initially went into a tailspin of self-doubt and depression. But for Nick, the feeling of helplessness didn’t last long. He realized the lay-off was due to the economy and had nothing to do with him as a person or his skills. He refocused his energy on new opportunities with a vigorous job search. When local firms in his field didn’t offer him a position, he expanded his search, eventually landing a promising position in a new city.
