“Apply yourself both now and in the next life,” the philosopher Plato wrote. “Without effort, you cannot be prosperous. Though the land be good, you cannot have an abundant crop without cultivation.”

His words run counter to the concept of the Law of Attraction that says that when you focus your thoughts in a positive or negative manner, you attract a positive or negative result. In other words, what you think about, you bring about. Plato’s words temper some of the hopes for magical life makeovers that stalwart followers of the Law of Attraction might expect.
