The True Purpose of Your Work

There are some conversations that you remember for a long time, and the one I had with Simon Sinek was powerful. We discussed trust, culture and what it takes to make people fantastic and at their best. According to Simon, most organizations are good at explaining what they do, and even how they do it. However, the most innovative and successful organizations “start with why.” They are able to clearly articulate the purpose behind their products and services and can inspire customers to action, with exceptional results. He persuasively argues his case, using Apple, among others, as living examples of organizations with a strong “why”. I was so impressed with Simon that I invited him to speak at the Imagine Your Workplace Conference in2012.

“Why” also has merit on an individual basis. When applied to our careers, the power of “why” is important because if we forget about the true purpose of our work we encounter an incapacitating force that weakens our emotional, mental, spiritual and physical energy. However, once realigning with “why”, our career path is filled with renewed energy and commitment, even within the same role.

Make. Work. Better.
