Develop Your Inner Coach

If it is your desire, as a manager, to be a great leader, then being an effective coach is a must. One of the primary differences between leadership and management is how you appreciate and communicate with people. Leadership grows from understanding that people are your organization’s greatest asset; coach-managers live from this principle rather than giving it lip service. This does not deny the importance of results; it amplifies the understanding that results happen because of people.

Getting started in your journey to become a more effective leader and coach, starts with curiosity. Find out from your colleagues and your direct reports what is expected of you. Be open-minded when you ask others about their expectations. Listen, clarify, and ask more questions. You cannot effectively coach or lead what you do not fully understand.

When you meet with your direct reports, ask them for their opinions. Find out what they are lacking in the completion of their responsibilities, what is working and what is not, and more about their professional goals and desires. With this knowledge, you can work with them in the future and understand what will engage them and how to leverage their abilities for the organization.
