I am and always have been a big believer in surrounding yourself with the right people who will help you get to the top. And I don’t mean social climbing. One of the biggest misconceptions that I encounter in the corporate game, and as a coach, is that someone’s title matches the degree of their influence. When it comes to who it’s important to know in your workplace, you need to throw out the organizational chart and instead keep a close eye on everyone, including those who may be the most unlikely candidates. In addition to leaders, there are many people who are pursuing the top. These are the people who are dining out with leaders — the people with connections to the bosses. These are the individuals people often overlook.
