Boost Sustainability and You’ll Boost Your Workplace

Simple steps that help promote a more sustainable and environmentally friendly workplace can help attract and retain workers — and boost morale

Sustainability hasn’t always been a focus for businesses, but its importance has been growing rapidly over the years. A 2017 McKinsey survey called Sustainability’s Deepening Imprint found that 70% of companies had a formal sustainability strategy in place, up from 56% in 2014.

Part of this, no doubt, is a response to the media’s increased coverage of environmental issues, including natural disasters such as flooding and wildfires. But there are economic benefits too: the study found that businesses that formally integrate sustainability into at least one of 11 core business functions (including human resources, research and development, sales and marketing, and finance) are at least twice as likely to report a positive financial impact as those that report otherwise.
