A Holistic Wellness Approach

Bringing in healthy food to a meeting, posting fitness activity on social media to challenge others, tracking sleep and unique daily challenges – these are just some of the holistic wellness activities employees at McKesson Canada are participating in these days. The company has adopted a unique, “holistic wellness approach” to health and wellness since last January – one that focuses on prevention and a proactive approach. McKesson aims to be “the healthiest company in health care”.

“In the Canadian market, what we’re being told is that no other company has tackled health and wellness the way we’re doing it currently,” says Geneviève Fortier, Senior Vice President, Human Resources, Government Affairs and Corporate Communications in Montréal, Québec.

McKesson Canada is a subsidiary of McKesson Corporation, the largest pharmaceutical distributor in North America, with more than 42,000 employees in the U.S. and $124 billion revenues annually. While McKesson Corporation launched its Health and Wellness program a few years ago, McKesson Canada only kicked it off in January 2013. They have taken a grass-roots approach to wellness, which has so far been successful if you consider the response received from employees (participation rates), favourable trends in claims submitted and chronic disease management pilot results.
