Back to the Future: Workplace Trends from 2001-2021

Your Workplace returns to the year 2001 and reports on the workplace trends that were important ten years ago. Then we return to the year 2011 and interview current leaders and experts in the Canadian workplace and learn of their predictions on trends for the next 10 years.

All Aboard the DeLorean

In the 1985 film, Back to the Future, Marty McFly goes back in time when his friend, Dr. Emmett “Doc” Brown, creates a time machine out of a DeLorean DMC-12. Your Workplace decided to take the DeLorean out for a spin. (We’d heard Doctor Who’s space ship, TARDIS, would be roomier, but decided to forgo the intergalactic space battles). We travelled 10 years into the past, and then 10 years into the future to examine what has been pressing on the workplaces front, and what we can expect in the next decade.

Stardate: 2001

Everyone is talking about the release of Wikipedia, iTunes, and the iPod. Writing on someone’s wall is considered an act of vandalism, tweeting is still just for birds, and in pre-YouTube, Charlie hasn’t yet bitten anyone’s finger. The first Harry Potter movie, and the first Shrek are in theatres, and Life of Pi is in its first printing. Not to mention the difficulty in tracking down a pumpkin spice latte. In 2001 Your Workplace was known as TakeTwo, and just switching from newsprint to our first glossy, full-colour magazine.
