Big Potential — How transforming the pursuit of success raises our achievement, happiness, and well-being
Shawn Achor is extremely prolific and has found a lucrative and meaningful niche in the world of positive psychology. This book, following other successful books and a top-viewed TED talk, is no exception. As the quote from Marianne Williamson says, “Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. Your playing small does not serve the world.” Achor encourages us to stop playing small and to recognize and achieve our “big potential.” Achor lays out a path with five stages — his “SEEDS” of big potential: to Surround yourself with positive influencers, to Expand your power by helping others, to Enhance your resources, to Defend against negative attacks and to Sustain your gains through the virtuous cycle.
This book is interesting, and I had to think about it — it’s as much “motivational speaking” as it is “positive psychology,” but this is also where Achor excels. If this system has worked for him and the others he has met and interviewed, then it’s definitely worth trying. Through this book, you will learn a fair bit about Achor and his family, and many other inspirational leaders (like Oprah), but I really do hope that you will learn how to stop “playing small” and how to shine a light on your “big potential” so that you can help others achieve their “big potential” too.
