Big decision… The biological clock is ticking

“Don’t leave it too late,” are the words women often hear if they postpone childbirth for an important promotion up the ladder in their career. Almost half of all Canadian babies are now born to women older than 30, according to Statistics Canada’s data for 2003, and we will likely see this figure increase over the next few years, experts say.

In 1975, only 6% of women gave birth after age 34, says Dr. Roger Pierson, a reproductive endocrinologist at the University of Saskatchewan and spokesman for the Canadian Fertility and Andrology Society. In 2005, 25% of all babies in Canada were born to women over 35.

The “up-or-out” career track can be very tough for women. There is a disparity between a woman’s biological reality and social expectations, in that women are being asked to be their most productive professionally during prime childbearing and childrearing ages.
