Educating Through Humour

As we prepare for the upcoming Imagine Your Workplace Conference, we have been exploring new ways of talking about sexual harassment at work. Can we resolve issues of disrespect collaboratively? Can we joke about it? Which got us thinking about what is probably the most popular humorous take on consent to date — the 2015 animated video, Tea and Consent.

We talked with Rachel Brian, who created the video in collaboration with British blogger, Emmeline May, who blogs as Rockstar Dinosaur Pirate Princess. The animation is based on May’s original blog post, which used the example of making someone tea as a metaphor for sexual consent.

Tea and Consent depicts a person asking someone if they want a cup of tea, and when they say “no,” forcing them to drink it. It then runs through a host of hilarious scenarios. Starting with: “Oh my God, I would love a cup of tea!” and progressively getting more absurd. The following are direct quotes from the video:
