There’s been much talk of how Information Technology is transforming the way we work. The significance of the IT revolution is said by some to match that of the Industrial Revolution. But while the IT-driven pace of work life is undeniably faster, this new revolution hasn’t really changed much else about the way we work.
Workers of the Industrial Revolution fought long and hard to overcome tyrannical practices of employers. Today, we don’t really have all that much tyranny to overcome. Or do we? Tyranny is alive and well in today’s workplace. The IT age is one in which the ongoing threat of downsizing has workers walking on eggshells, well aware that as mere “human resources,” they are highly expendable. It’s safe to say that dissatisfaction with the status quo is an integral part of the status quo.
