City of Hamilton rises to the challenge
The workplace wellness goal was to motivate employees with a fun “Race to Dublin” and to be active the equivalent of 10,000 steps a day. In a diverse workplace with multiple physical locations, an online virtual challenge was seen as the best opportunity to reach a greater number of employees. Healthy Workplace Specialist, Lisa Gilmour, identified the solution to implement an online team challenge, The Race to Dublin, for the city employees with very interesting results.
Online wellness challenges are a new way of delivering motivational employee team events to help people live healthier lifestyles, which businesses are adding to their wellness programs. The results for this twelve-week challenge were good, with 45 teams registering and over 450 people joining in the online workplace challenge event.
Participants increased their activity levels by an average of 14% over the twelve-week event. In addition, up to 36% of the participants reached the 10,000-step health benefit target level at some point in the challenge, showing them they can do it. Many people are not clear on how long or how much activity they need to reach a health benefit level and often underestimate it.
