Hard-Learned Lessons

A journey can take many forms. In my case, a few years ago, it was both a personal and professional one — a journey to self discovery

It started about three years ago, when I was in the wrong place. Working in the wrong place, that is. Lessons can be hard-learned, and this was a difficult one. After moving to another city without a job I was desperate to merge into the working world. A friend of a friend recommended me for a corporate job and I applied and got it. I had experience in writing, editing and communications, and I was set to go.

Perhaps the first clue should have been the workplace chatter amongst my new-found colleagues about reality TV shows and CSI-type dramas. Not that I have anything completely against them, per se. But if TV drama is a subject of conversation at work, I prefer CBC’s hit drama series “Being Erica”. “Learn to be what you are, and learn to resign, with good grace, all that you are not,” Dr. Tom says to Erica in a recent episode (quoting Henry Frederick Emile). Words to live by.
