Most companies would argue that allowing work-from-home arrangements are positive for both employer and employees. A recent Stanford University study showed that such arrangements boosted employee productivity, while saving the employer overhead costs. Yet Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer recently made the controversial decision to ban Yahoo employees from working at home, sparking a debate about whether or not telecommuting is really so good after all.
Critics decried Mayer, saying that this spelled the end of Yahoo. Others came to her defense, arguing that, in certain cases, work-from-home policies do not benefit the employer. Yahoo’s only comment on the matter was that this was what the company needed at this point in time and this decision was not a “broad industry view on working from home.”
