I am an on-again, off-again exerciser. I have a great running routine culminating in a 5–km and 10–km race. But then a funny thing seems to happen. Once finishing the race I take a few days off from exercising. Those few days turn into weeks that turn into months, and I find myself struggling with the uphill battle to get fit again. My biggest challenge at that point seems to be finding the time to workout with a jam-packed schedule. Ironically, I teach time management. So using the “I don’t have time for exercise” excuse just doesn’t cut it. But the reality is that my busy life leaves me stretched for time.
The secret is to protect time for top priorities before other things get in the way. The secret is to establish a routine, which is not about planning every minute of every day. Rather, routines provide the guidelines around what to work on and when.
