Interview: Is Canada Competitive?

Ken Coates is a professor of history and Dean of Arts at the University of Waterloo. His research focuses on regional economic development, particularly the North and aboriginal communities and he has a second interest in international innovation focusing particularly on developments in Japan and Asia. He was interviewed by Your Workplace at the conference, 2017: The Workplace, hosted by the University of Waterloo in October 2007.

YW: Can you tell our readers whether Canada is positioned to undertake the challenges of the 21st century workplace?

Dr. Coates: We have become a complacent country. We assume that the prosperity of the past will be the prosperity of the future and looking at the globe as a whole shows that this is not at all guaranteed. I don’t think that an individual or an organization, and certainly not even a nation, can prepare itself for the 21st century unless it knows what’s going on in a broader scale. So my work is designed to alert people to the broader social economic and political trends inside and outside Canada.
