Ancient Chinese philosopher Confucius once said, “Find a job you love, and you will never work a day in your life.” Wise words, but today we know that employee happiness is as much about the workplace as the job description. Companies that foster opportunities for professional growth, take safety seriously and create a culture that respects work-life balance become desirable places to work. In return, these companies benefit from great employee retention, productivity and customer service. Jessica Brown never imagined she’d work in the trucking industry. Before she snagged her sales job at Premiere Van Lines (Halifax), a company that moves people and businesses across Canada and beyond, she was working in property management but hoping to get back into sales. A former colleague, Clint Giffin, had just started with the company and asked Brown if she’d like to come aboard: “I said, ‘A trucking company? Really?’ ” While she knew nothing about the industry, she figured she’d give it a shot.
