This is a season for celebration, a time to foster the warmth of camaraderie in a cold climate. As the new editor of Your Workplace, I’m delighted to find myself in a work environment where we value the unique contribution each of us makes toward the creation of a dynamic and thought-provoking magazine.

In this issue, we focus on relationship development in the workplace. Owner of Business Excellence, Suzanne Schell, illustrates the importance of employee appreciation in regard to worker retention. She offers practical advice on preventing dissatisfaction and giving meaningful recognition to staff members.

Each of us brings something of value to the table. How do we honour cultural differences in a way that creates cohesion? Kym Wolfe deftly addresses the matter in “Why Successful Companies Embrace Diversity”, offering ideas for welcoming new recruits from diverse backgrounds and appreciating workers’ perspectives that are informed by culture.

A corporate event provides the perfect opportunity for deepening bonds between employees and managers. Minimizing the stress of throwing a party means that those playing host can enjoy the gathering as well. Kevin Young makes the task easier with a thorough article on the ins and outs of event planning.

As workers, we also have a responsibility to honour ourselves. If we’re stressed out with pre-holiday task overload, we may not be taking enough breaks. In Part 1 of a 3-part series, Patricia Katz explains the importance of pauses that refresh for healthy productivity.
