Temporary Avoidance: Reflect Before Acting

One of my New Year’s resolutions this year was to do more writing that’s actually useful to busy leaders in today’s turbulent world. This resolution fits with my ongoing transition from formal university teaching toward coaching people struggling with real-world demands. In fact, the intentional focus of my life and work is “compassionate support to leaders and communities, bringing hope and dignity to vulnerable people”. Thus it’s a good resolution that’s worth keeping throughout the coming year.

And I really will try to provide practical wisdom, moderating a tendency toward witty philosophical observations of little use in the real world. There’s a wonderful old management adage: “It’s hard to discuss the swamp when you are up to your waistline in alligators.” Think of this as a mentoring service for those who live on alligator farms. These days, that’s just about every leader in any sector – at least those who take their work seriously.
