Remaining physically and mentally active throughout our lives is a documented safeguard against ailment and depression. However, how many people make the most of our time outside work? There is a sad contrast between what people most enjoy doing and what they actually do during the eight hours or so in between work and sleep. Television and now surfing the Internet, are the most common past times. If you watch between two and three hours of television a day (and that’s not hard to do — a rerun of CSI, the news, the last period of a Habs game), five days a week for your entire working career, you will have spent 2.3 years with your brain largely turned off and your bum rooted to a sofa.
