UP FRONT: An introduction to this issue 18-6
The new year is almost upon us, and we’re thinking about our New Year’s resolutions. Whether it’s getting in shape with the functional fitness program covered in this issue’s Matters section, learning strategies on how to become a more mindful leader, or tips on how to empower our employees to solve their own problems, we’re looking to get workplaces in shape — physically, mentally and emotionally.
In this issue, body language expert, Mark Bowden, teaches us how to build trust as leaders by projecting an authentic presence. Isabel Rut profiles Rideau Recognition Solutions, a company whose family ties make for an admirably close-knit group of employees. CEO, Peter Hart’s exuberance for engagement is infectious. In an article on wellness, Heather Pulman shows us how we can promote physical and mental health in our organizations, and our cover story highlights the importance of resiliency in the workplace.
Given the wide spectrum of human experience (and finances), it’s worthwhile to rethink some common assumptions about gratitude. What the unhappy folks of the world need isn’t gratitude persay; rather, what they need is a carefully considered perspective that makes gratitude possible. Sincere gratitude is a bit like love: those people who search the hardest for it generally have the most trouble experiencing it. We tend to feel genuinely appreciative when we’re not forcing it, but instead created the optimal mental conditions for gratitude to manifest in our lives.
Of all our resolutions, improving resilience is perhaps the most important. In Rising Up From Defeat, Lisa Ricciotti discusses the characteristics of resilient employees and gives tips on how to foster a mindset that encourages self-renewal. She demonstrates how organizations can become more resilient, not just by hiring resilient employees, but by cultivating a culture in which everyone is personally invested in the organization’s well-being.
