Vacationless: Are We Taking Enough Leisure/Vacation time?

When Henry Ford began paying his employees $25 a week for five days of work, he did this because if his workers worked all the time, they couldn’t be good consumers and buy the product they were making. But also, perhaps more importantly, Henry Ford knew the importance of resting his (human) machines.

“You need time away in order to do something well,” says Al Gini, Professor of Philosophy as well as Business Ethics in the School of Business Administration at Loyola University in Chicago, and author of the book The Importance of Being Lazy. “You need to step away from work to enjoy it. I think rest, play and leisure actually produces better workers … The puritans said we should take a day off, but begrudgingly so we could rest to come back and be a more vital worker. But the reality is, it is true. You need time off to become a better person, and therefore if you become a better person you become a better worker … ”
