“What kind of gift would you buy your manager this holiday season?” I asked a friend. A vacant look came over her face and she said that she had no clue. Further inquiry revealed that, although she had been working with him for a year, she didn’t really know a lot about his likes and dislikes, interests or concerns.
Perhaps the question should have been, “Is it appropriate to buy your boss a gift at all?” Would your supervisor feel awkward receiving a present from you? If your boss is the owner of the company, it can be quite embarrassing, yet because you enjoy working there, you may want to show your gratitude in some way during the holiday season.
It is always wise to respect your company’s policies and customs when it comes to gift- giving. Some organizations have a “no gift-giving or receiving” policy that includes all employees. You may find that randomly drawing for names and giving small, fun presents is customary in your company.
