Work/Life Balance…

Here are 25 ways to help you get there, gleaned from employee feedback from the 2009 and 2010 Top Workplaces Where Employees Thrive award winners. (As part of the Thrive Awards selection process, employees are surveyed on a variety of aspects about their workplaces, including practices that help them be productive and well—at home and at work).

  1. Rename it life/work balance to show that life is the priority.
  2. Sometimes work has to come first–if there’s a deadline or an emergency. When this happens, let employees know the extra effort is appreciated–and follow-up with some in- house celebrating like a catered lunch, an early Friday close, or some other small recognition.
  3. Provide tools to help employees work from home when they might need to–whether they need to wait for a furnace technician or care for a sick child. What tools do your team members need: Internet connections, hardware, software, Skype? Have things in place so everything is there when needed.
  4. Encourage employees to stay home when they’re sick–and make it easy for them to do this! Have plans in place for covering essential duties and contingencies for meeting deadlines to give peace of mind for the one who’s sick without being onerous for everyone else on the team.
